Product Introduction
Products Description
Linear bearings are designed to enable free movement in one direction, providing linear motion with minimal deflection and friction along the shaft. They can utilize pads, bushings, or roller systems to support loads that may not move in a perfectly straight line. These bearings help reduce friction in motion systems that operate along straight or curved paths. For heavier loads, linear guides with recirculating ball or roller bearings in the mounting pads or slide units are employed to better support the load. The rolling element within the bearing facilitates load movement. Modifications and additions to these basic components are made to meet various manufacturing and industrial requirements. Linear bearings are used in a wide range of applications, both small and large.
Available Materials Used in Linear Motion Bearing
Steel
Steel, an alloy primarily composed of carbon and iron, is the most popular material for linear bearings due to its excellent mechanical properties, such as high strength and rigidity. These properties enable steel linear bearings to support heavy loads while providing smooth and precise motion. Common types of steel used in these bearings include carbon steel and stainless steel. Increasing the carbon content in steel enhances its hardness, which in turn affects the performance of the linear bearing.
Aluminum
Aluminum is a lightweight yet strong metal that is resistant to corrosion and chemicals. Although it is softer and less expensive than steel, aluminum linear bearings have a lower load capacity. Despite this, they still offer smooth and precise motion.
Plastics
Plastic linear bearings are softer and more affordable than their metallic counterparts, and they also have a lower coefficient of friction. Common plastics used include nylon, polyethylene, and PVDF, often lined with a self-lubricating coating like PTFE. To enhance their weight-bearing capabilities, these plastics may be reinforced with fibers and fillers. Plastic linear bearings are suitable for use with softer shaft materials, though they typically have lower load capacities and are restricted to room temperature applications.
Bronze
Bronze, an alloy primarily composed of copper and zinc with additives like manganese and phosphorus, is a soft metal with a higher load capacity than plastic. However, the metal-to-metal contact in bronze bearings generates more friction than in plastic bearings, necessitating proper lubrication maintenance.
Ceramics
Ceramic linear bearings are usually made from materials such as silicon nitride, aluminum oxide, zirconium oxide, and silicon carbide. They are characterized by high rigidity, which maintains travel accuracy and precision at high speeds. Their high hardness increases service life and abrasion resistance, while reducing particle generation from component sliding. Ceramics are also compatible with vacuum and ESD-sensitive environments.
Composite Materials
Composite bearings consist of a metal backing combined with a plastic sleeve or a PTFE liner. The polymer component prevents metal-to-metal contact, lowering the coefficient of friction while maintaining high load capacity. The metal backing helps in dissipating heat, enhancing the bearing's performance.
